February 2014 State Bar of Montana Applicant Information
This information is intended to answer general bar examination questions for those who have applied for the February 2014 Montana Bar Admissions Cycle. The Uniform Bar Examination (UBE) will be given on February 25 and 26, and the Montana Law Seminar (MLS) will be held on February 27, 2014. All applicants should become familiar with the Montana Rules of Admission, Rules of the Board of Bar Examiners and Rules of the Character & Fitness Commission. The links below include important information regarding exam schedules, fees, deadlines and instructions, so please review thoroughly. Some of the requirements listed are specific only to examination applicants and not to UBE transfers.

Montana Bar Examination Deadlines, Schedules & Instructions
INFORMATION & LOCATION of the MONTANA BAR EXAMINATION & MONTANA LAW SEMINAR:
Both the UBE and the MLS will be held at the Great Northern Hotel in Helena from February 25-27, 2014.
Uniform Bar Examination: The Court in its July 3, 2013 Order adopting the Uniform Bar Examination, stated, "We conclude that a nationally uniform licensing examination for lawyers would facilitate lawyer mobility, increase the objectivity of the testing process, and enhance protection of the public."
Montana Law Seminar: The Court directed the creation of an educational seminar to focus on 1) the structure of the legal system in Montana; 2) the unique aspects of Montana law, including the Montana Constitution; and 3) the accepted mores and culture of practicing law in Montana as a requirement to admission.
UBE TRANSFER APPLICANTS to the MONTANA BAR:
Applicants to the State Bar of Montana who are applying by transfer of a UBE score have the same requirements for admission, with the exception of sitting for the examination. The process for transfer is outlined in these UBE Excerpts from the Montana Rules for Admission and the eligibility information below.
REGISTER & PAY FEES FOR THE UBE & the MLS:
Registration for the Montana Law Seminar and/or the Uniform Bar Exam is open only to applicants to the Montana State Bar. These fees are not refundable and applicants may wait until they have been certified by the Commission on Character & Fitness before submitting the fee. Please register and pay online or send a check or money order to Montana Bar Admissions at PO Box 577, Helena, MT 59624.
To be eligible for admission, you must:
1. Have earned a JD from an ABA accredited law school;
2. Have been certified by the Commission on Character & Fitness;
3. Have submitted a qualifying MPRE score;
4. Have submitted a qualifying UBE score (whether by exam or transfer);
5. Have attended the Montana Law Seminar;
6. Have paid your license tax and dues to the State Bar of Montana.
Once the above requirements have been met, successful applicants will be provided with detailed swearing-in instructions.
