This article is written by ABA Section of Family Law member Mark Sullivan, who is an expert on Military Issues in Family Law.

With the ongoing conflict in Iraq, more of our servicemen and women are being called to active duty.  Many of those being called have ongoing family issues related to divorce, child custody, visitation and support.   Thus, family law attorneys are being called on frequently to advise those who have been deployed on these important legal issues.  This article addresses these issues as they relate to military personnel.

The author, Mark Sullivan, is a retired Army Reserve JAG colonel who practices with Sullivan & Grace, P.A. in Raleigh, NC.  A board-certified specialist in family law and past president of the North Carolina Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, he is chairman of the ABA Section of Family Law Military Committee.  Mr. Sullivan is also the author of the Section’s soon-to-be published, The Military Divorce Handbook, which will be available for distribution this Spring.  If you would like to pre-order a copy of the book at a discounted rate, contact Amelia Stone at 312-988-6085 or visit and search for Product Code 5130135.
