Gov. Steve Bullock on Tuesday appointed Billings attorney Don Harris as Yellowstone County District Court judge.

Harris was one of three people the Judicial Nomination Commission submitted for consideration to the governor. He replaces the Honorable Russell C. Fagg, who retired Oct. 13 to re-enter private practice.

The other finalists were Billings attorneys Jessica Fehr and Joseph Raffiani.

Harris must run for election in 2018 to retain the seat.

Harris, 65, is a partner at Harris, Gannett and Varela in Billings. He is a 1983 graduate of the University of Montana School of Law, and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Montana.

A past member of the Montana Trial Lawyers Association, Harris was named the Montana Trial Lawyer of the Year in 2013. He also has been honored with the State Bar’s Distinguished Service Award and the Montana Civil Rights Protection and Advocacy System’s Courage Award.

His field of practice includes commercial litigation, professional negligence, insurance coverage/bad faith, plaintiff personal injury, nursing home negligence/abuse, and wrongful death. Don is a member of MTLA’s Board of Directors and serves on the Commission on Practice.
