On Wednesday, October 7, the United States Supreme Court heard oral argument in two consolidated cases, one of which is Ford Motor Company v. Montana Eighth Judicial District Court.  Both cases raise the issue of personal jurisdiction over a defendant when none of the defendant’s forum contacts caused the plaintiff’s claims.  Justice McKinnon (who wrote the Montana Supreme Court opinion) will discuss the background and why the case is important.  The State’s acting solicitor general, Matthew Cochenour will discuss the process for petitioning for cert. and responding to cert petitions and what happens after cert if granted.  Dennis Conner and Ian McIntosh, the attorneys who briefed the case in the Montana Supreme Court, will discuss the process of preparing for oral argument and excerpts from the actual argument.
