The U.S. Department of Education is investigating a complaint that claims systematic discrimination against American Indian students against the Wolf Point School District.

Federal officials confirmed that the investigation was opened on Dec. 28, the Billings Gazette reports. That was a week after The New York Times and Pro Publica published stories highlighting the school district's disparities in academic achievement and discipline rates between white and American Indian students, as well as the claims from a civil rights complaint.

In an email to the Gazette, an attorney who represents Wolf Point Schools denied that the school district discriminates against its students.
