State Bar of Montana members in May will vote to elect a new President-Elect, Trustees from five areas and State Bar Delegate to the American Bar Association.
Ballots will be sent to members on May 1. To vote, members must return their ballots postmarked by May 21. Ballots will be counted on June 1.
The bar has sent candidates a questionnaire to allow members to get to know them better.
The three Trustee positions from Area C (Lake, Mineral, Missoula, Ravalli and Sanders Counties) are up for election. Current trustee Kaylan Minor is the only candidate.
Here are Minor's responses:
What do you feel you will bring to this position?
I will continue to bring energy and dedication to serving the legal community in Area C through open communication, planning for service and pro bono opportunities, and organization of local bar association meetings and CLE opportunities. I will continue to serve as a clear, accurate, and representative voice for the members of Area C at Board of Trustee and State Bar meetings. Going into a second term with the Board of Trustees will allow me to capitalize on my experience and better represent Area C and the matters important to our local attorneys by maximizing established relationships and knowledge of resources available to members of the bar.
What can you tell us about your Area? In what ways are you familiar with local bar activities, attorneys and events?
I serve as the President of the Fifth Judicial District Bar Association and in that capacity, I coordinate with attorneys, paralegals, clerks of court, judges, and other people in our legal community to plan meetings, CLE opportunities, and social events multiple times per year. Area C has a small, but active and lively group of attorneys that are engaged in our communities. I strive to provide more CLE and meeting opportunities over a wide geographic area. I also feel it is important to travel to provide in-person support and representation to bar associations in Area C.
Tell us about yourself and your practice
After law school, I began practicing in a small firm and have operated my solo practice out of Dillon, Montana since 2013. My primary areas of practice are criminal defense, family law, dependency and neglect, and guardian ad litem work. In 2017, I was elected to serve as the Dillon City Court Judge. Since taking public office, my private practice is winding down, but I will remain an active attorney member of the bar. I look forward to the opportunity to continue to serve members of the bar in Southwestern Montana.
