Disclaimer

The Supreme Court adopted new Rules for Admission to the Bar of Montana, as well as amendments to the Board of Bar Examiners' Rules and Rules of Procedure of the Character & Fitness Commission. The Rules implemented significant changes to Admission to the Montana Bar. The following information is a summary of the process for admission to the State Bar of Montana and any variation in the information will defer to the Rules.

Eligibility for Admission:

To be eligible for admission, you must have:

Earned a JD from an ABA accredited law school;
Been certified by the Commission on Character & Fitness;
Submitted a qualifying MPRE score;
Submitted a qualifying UBE score (whether by exam or transfer) or have fulfilled the requirements to qualify for Admission on Motion;
Viewed the Montana Law Seminar; and
Paid your license tax to the Supreme Court and dues to the State Bar of Montana.

Certified Application Copy Requests:

To request a copy of your application to Montana for submission to another jurisdiction, please submit payment online here and email mhartze@montanabar.org advising payment has been submitted, who the application request is regarding, and where you would like the application copy sent. Otherwise, you can send a written request with $15 check paid to the order of, "State Bar of Montana" to P.O. Box 577 - Helena, MT 59624.

Application files are maintained for five years, after which, if no litigation is pending concerning the application, the file may be destroyed.

Admission on Motion

For applicants who have been in active practice for a minimum of five (5) of the last seven (7) years.

UBE Score Transfer

For applicants who wish to transfer Uniform Bar Examination Score from another jurisdiction.

Take the Bar Exam

For applicants who have recently graduated or that do not qualify for either of the other two methods of admission.
