President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1st as Law Day in 1958. He wrote that "the people of this Nation should remember with pride and vigilantly guard the great heritage of liberty, justice, and equality under law which our forefathers bequeathed to us." Therefore, he urged "the people of the United States to observe the designated day with appropriate ceremonies and activities; and I especially urge the legal profession, the press, and the radio, television, and motion-picture industries to promote and to participate in the observance of that day." Law Day was later recognized by an act of Congress.

The Vision of the State Bar of Montana echoes the words of President Eisenhower: "A trusted and independent legal system that safeguards individual liberties, ensures access to justice, and serves as a pillar of democracy for this and future generations."

As noted by the United States Courts, each year, the American Bar Association selects a national theme for Law Day. This year's national theme is The Rule of Law and the American Dream.
