As America prepares to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, it is worth noting the pivotal role lawyers played in the founding of our nation. As Chief Justice John Roberts wrote in the 2025 Year End Report on the Federal Judiciary, not only were four of the five drafters trained in the law, but of those who signed the document, "a disproportionate number [were] lawyers, many of whom went on to distinguished judicial careers after the Revolution."

In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed May 1st as Law Day. He wrote that "the people of this Nation should remember with pride and vigilantly guard the great heritage of liberty, justice, and equality under law which our forefathers bequeathed to us." Therefore, he urged "the people of the United States to observe the designated day with appropriate ceremonies and activities; and I especially urge the legal profession, the press, and the radio, television, and motion-picture industries to promote and to participate in the observance of that day." Law Day was later recognized by an act of Congress.

The Vision of the State Bar of Montana echoes the words of President Eisenhower: "A trusted and independent legal system that safeguards individual liberties, ensures access to justice, and serves as a pillar of democracy for this and future generations."

As noted by the United States Courts, each year, the American Bar Association selects a national theme for Law Day. This year's national theme is The Rule of Law and the American Dream. Whether under that national theme or one recognizing the 250th anniversary of the Declaration, the State Bar encourages all Montanans to plan activities to celebrate Law Day 2026. This page provides links to planned activities in Montana, as well as resources for attorneys, local bar associations, civic groups, and educators to develop programming.

Activities can be simple and meaningful, such as:

  • Classroom visits by attorneys or judges

  • Courthouse tours

  • Mock trials or panel discussions

  • Short community presentations on why the rule of law matters

We encourage local bars to:

  • Partner with schools, civic groups, and courts

  • Coordinate with federal, state, or local judges in their area when possible

  • Share event details so the State Bar can promote statewide participation

  • Use the provided messaging to maintain a consistent focus on the Rule of Law

Even one event can make a meaningful impact in strengthening civic understanding and public trust in our legal system.
