Candidate statement for Sherine Fernando, Area G Trustee

Serving as a State Bar of Montana (“State Bar”) Trustee is an important role for the successful operation and regulation of the practice of law in Montana.  If elected, I am committed to remaining active, diligent, and thoughtful in carrying out my duties.

I was appointed as an Area G Trustee in September 2021, and have the time, knowledge, and skills necessary to continue to serve in this position.   I am entering my 10th year in practice, and I am a partner and owner of Blackford Carls P.C. in Bozeman, Montana.  My practice focuses on a variety of matters, including civil rights, Title IX, discrimination, personal injury, and civil litigation.

As a Montana native, I am connected within my community and across the State. I have experience serving on a variety of boards and am currently a Trustee for the Gallatin County Bar Association.  I was formerly the Chair for the Family Law Section for the State Bar (2015-2017); a Trustee for the New Lawyers Section for the State Bar (2014-2018); and Vice President and Director for HAVEN (2014-2020), a domestic violence shelter in Gallatin County. I am an active member of the Montana Trial Lawyers Association and was named Top 10 Under 40 by the National Academy of Family Law Attorneys in 2016.

My current and prior experience as a trustee and board member for several organizations is suitable for continued service as a Trustee for the State Bar.
